Curious Case Files #2 – Broad Haven Primary

October 6, 2026

By Natalie Pearce

This a class from Broad Haven Primary School in Wales in 1977. Their pictures of UFOs came about not from an art or science project for school but to gather evidence in a unique mass UFO sighting.

On February 4th, 1977, during the normal school day, fourteen classmates witnessed seeing a craft land in an adjacent field to the school. It was just after lunch break that the children saw a long cigar-shaped craft land that had an orange light sitting in a dome-shaped roof. The craft was metallic silver in colour. It remained stationary on the field until around 3:30pm when it took off into a hover for a number of minutes before flying into the sky and out of sight.

During later investigations, one of the teachers also confirmed she has seen a silver cigar-shaped object on the field and at the same time experienced a humming sound as the craft started to hover.

A report was made by a concerned parent to a local UFO investigator who managed to interview one of the children around an hour after the end of school that day. The boy, David Davies, took him to the location on the field however the heavy rain meant there was nothing to see. What was noted was a heavily damaged telephone pole bent at a peculiar angle. The investigator noted how David was visibly frightened by what he had experienced.

Six of the class claimed to have seen a humanoid figure outside the craft dressed in a silver spacesuit. They described the figure as having long pointed ears.

There was heavy press interest after the school sighting. Ralph Llewellyn, the Head Teacher, issued a public statement stating he had personally interviewed each of the pupils and said he did not “disbelieve they saw something they had never seen before”. He went on to say that people who claimed it was an elaborate hoax the children were part of were wrong because they were so young and not “capable of a sustained, sophisticated hoax”.

Around the same time, many other reports in local areas were made. Some of bright orbs in the sky, others of crafts themselves. Many thought the hype of the events at the school had resulted in people reporting untrue sightings.

Not so far away on Ripperston Farm, within an area the media would label the ‘Broad Haven Triangle’, the Coombs family were also experiencing strange phenomena. Their TV would burn itself out, strange electrical disturbances were noted, lights were seen in the sky and even on one occasion a herd of their cows moved from one field to another over a mile away as if by magic. Two months after the sighting at the school, the family were sat watching TV when a figure appeared at their window. The being was dressed in a “spacesuit” and had a vacant expression on its face. The family called the Police who attended and later described the family as being the most terrified people he had ever taken statements from.

As the incidents continued in the area, the Ministry of Defence conducted an investigation after locals complained to their MP. The outcome of this has never been disclosed. Even so many years after the event, none of the pupils that witnessed the school incident have ever come forward to claim it was a hoax and all have kept to their stories, despite ridicule over the years.

Yes, there were the normal theories over the years of people perhaps making a silver spacesuit to freak out locals, or the person in the spacesuit actually being a workman in fireproof clothing. There are those that state that the children simply saw an agricultural vehicle in the field that day. Even Nick Pope would comment that “there isn’t a single, neat solution to the mystery”.
